Observations: For the 2007 CONTACT Photography Festival in Toronto, Maleonn's Feature Exhibition Labyrinth was highlighted in the Toronto Star (Thursday, April 26, 2007, p. G3) in an article by Visual Arts Critic Peter Goddard ("Contact puts the world in focus: Annual festival of photography, May 1-31, seems more self-assured than ever before").
After ending his article on CONTACT with the observation that "a guide is needed to make it through the some 500 artists and 200 venues, so we've compiled a list of the Top 10 things you absolutely must have or know about next month's Contact 2007," Goddard gives pride of place to a large reproduction of a Maleonn's "Book of Taboo No 2" (the present work: see left) in the centre of a full-page collage of Top 10 images.
Goddard's accompanying commentary reads: "....Shanghai-based Maleonn (Ma Liang) is the reigning fabulist among today's new crop of photographers with an almost child-like imagination producing lyrical digital fantasies."
This work currently remains available in an edition of 15 in a 60 x 90 cm (approx 24x36 in.) format and an edition of 6 in a 90x135 cm (approx 36x54 in.) format.
